Community Update - 19 March

19 March 2020

Dear Parents/Carers

We continue to follow advice provided by the Government Health authorities as we navigate the COVID-19 season. These professionals have the best interests of all Australians at heart and are looking at the latest data on a regular basis. As a College we will only close when they inform us to do so. The College Executive team are meeting every day to consider how we can improve our response to this situation and below are some of the decisions we have made. Communication will continue to come out daily.

Activity Updates

The following activities have been suspended until further notice:

  • Basketball until the end of Term 3
  • Rugby until the end of Term 3
  • Cross Country Inter-house competitions have been postponed
  • All current AFL competitions have been cancelled or postponed
  • Netball training and club activities have been suspended
  • Interschool Sport competitions have been cancelled for term 2
  • Hinterland, South Coast and Queensland Teams and Trials have been suspended until further notice
  • Futsal is suspended until further notice

Performing Arts

  • All before and after school Co-Curricular Performing Arts rehearsals will be suspended for the remainder of Term 1, effective this Friday, 20 March at 5pm. This includes choirs, bands, string groups, dance group and dramafest.
  • Senior Years Choir (Years 10-12) and Middle Years Choir (Years 7-9) which normally rehearse during Tuesday’s Life Group time will also be suspended.
  • Musical rehearsals will finish this week. The College is looking to reschedule the musical in Term 4. The College will issue a Musical update to parents before Monday of next week.

The following Performing Arts programs during the school day will continue through to the end of the term as per schedule:

  • Private Instrumental/Vocal/Speech and Drama Tuition - These lessons with our tutors will continue to be held at student’s regular scheduled lesson times
  • Choral Tutorials - Bel Canto, Bella Voce, Poco Voce and Pathways tutorials will continue as per Term 1 roster
  • JLC String and Band Tutorials (Years 4-6) - Small group tutorials will continue as per normal
  • Year 5-6 Band and String Ensemble rehearsals will continue as part of the Academic Music Program on a Thursday during school time. The large ensembles such as Year 5-6 Bands will be split into smaller ensemble groups to address social distancing safety measures
  • Years 2-4 and 5-6 Choir rehearsals will continue to the end of the term and will also be divided to reduce overall numbers allowing for adequate hygiene precautions
  • CAPA continues this week. They will contact families with arrangements for future lessons.

  • The remaining sessions of Year 6 Surf Awareness have been cancelled
  • Year 5 DCL Evening next Wednesday 25 March has been cancelled

  • Mountain bike training will continue off campus, but with a maximum of 8 students
  • The existing format for the Sparks/Flames/Explosions activities will cease at the end of this week. The College is prepared to offer a range of activities appropriate to the current Government guidelines. This will be released to the community on Friday. Irrespective of this, the College will be providing a safe environment for students to be supervised after school until 4.30pm to help working parents.

I am regularly asked about the College’s plans and I can assure you that we are as prepared as possible for the ever-changing landscape we are experiencing. We are upgrading the College online platform in case schools are directed to close for a period, but we are currently delivering the curriculum as per normal, in all year levels, daily.
