COVID-19 - Community Update -16 March 2020

Community Update - 16 March 2020

The Hillcrest Christian College Executive Team are meeting every day to discuss the current Coronavirus (COVID-19) situation and adjust our plans as further information is provided by the Government Health Authorities.

These meetings discuss all aspects of College operations against a comprehensive localised Risk Assessment Checklist. This ensures all students and their families are protected to the best of our ability. Every decision is rigorously explored before a final position is reached and we will continue to update our community every day.

We recognise that every decision will have a range of responses from the community, but rest assured we have considered all aspects and options and made the decision using the best evidence available with the whole of community in mind.

Current Update

On Sunday afternoon, the Prime Minister gave a National Update on the COVID-19 following a special National Cabinet and confirmed:

  • Schools will remain open and respond to local issues as required and on the advice of health authorities
  • Anyone returning from international travel will be required to self-quarantine on arrival back in Australia for a period of 14 days. Other members of the family do not need to go into self-isolation (at this point in time)
  • Mass gatherings of 500+ people are not to proceed; and
  • For other non-essential gatherings, consider the need to proceed and extend health and hygiene precautions along with social distancing, as further mitigations to the spread of the virus
College Actions
  • We have made a number of important decisions to support this direction including;
  • Cancelling all Chapel Gatherings and Assemblies until further notice
  • Cancelling the Year 1 and Year 2 swimming program immediately
  • Cancelling the Cooktown and Thailand Mission trip for 2020
  • Postponing the Senior School Music Evening that was to be held on Monday 16th March
  • Ensuring staff are fully trained to deliver a learning program to all students if there is a need for a shut down

None of these decisions are taken lightly or singularly, as this is a very complex issue that many people have strong opinions about.  As a College, we will continue to act on the medical advice of the Government Health Authorities and continue to provide you with as much information as possible.

Community COVID-19 Microsite

None of these decisions are taken lightly or singularly, as this is a very complex issue that many people have strong opinions about.  As a College, we will continue to act on the medical advice of the Government Health Authorities and continue to provide you with as much information as possible.

To support you we have launched a microsite s to keep our community informed and prepared for any future changes.  You will find regular updates on this site and be able to see any changes that have been made.

At this point, there is no indication of widespread Government closures of schools.  There have been closures for short periods of time when COVID-19 infections have been identified within a community.  All people who test positive are reported to the relevant Health authorities and subsequent decisions about these patients associated communities, including schools, are then made. Impacted organisations and communities are then notified of these decisions.

At this point no Hillcrest community member has tested positive to COVID-19. If this changes, we will let the community know immediately and inform you directly of the next steps that we have been instructed to take. A decision to close will be made by the Government Health authorities in all cases.

If a member of your immediate family has undertaken a COVID-19 test please notify your relevant Head of Community immediately and we ask that all members of your family do not come on campus. Once the test result has been received please notify the Head of Community as soon as possible. We continue to pray for all members of the Hillcrest community. We have a God who loves each of us individually and gives us a hope and a purpose every day.

Yesterday I read a blog from a lady who wrote from her small apartment in Wuhan where she has been quarantined for the past 47 days. Her message was full of hope and blessings as she had found a community she never knew existed. People have bonded together to help each other which was instilling hope and a purpose for their future. She mentioned how her life has been positively transformed, and how she has built stronger friendships and learnt to trust God for her future.

This message of hope came from a place where we may believe there is only despair. I encourage you to think of how as a community will get through this together. Our lives may change from week to week, but we remain committed to ensuring we will support one another through this COVID-19 situation.

Blessings
