From Textbooks to Antarctica: Hillcrest students go beyond the classroom

Hillcrest Christian College has partnered with Australian adventurer, Geoff Wilson of 5th Element Expeditions in creating learning experiences beyond the classroom and to the far reaches of the earth using the latest in digital technologies.

Geoff Wilson and Jeff Davis recently attended the Microsoft Australia eXchange in Sydney where they not only thoroughly entertained and amused their audience, but also captured their full attention when speaking of the innovation of Hillcrest. The audience and Microsoft were captivated hearing of Hillcrest's latest building project. “What child wouldn’t want to come to school in a castle?”

Vision

Hillcrest Christian College in Queensland is leading the way in innovative learning. It’s committed to providing the best possible learning opportunities, which means using the best technology available to make learning fun, teach the skills our society will need in the future, empower them to learn at their own pace and even teach them how to manage risk in a safe way.

Solution

Hillcrest is on a three-year journey to embed Microsoft technology into the entire College. Soon, all students will use their Surface devices and Office 365 to access learning resources from around the world. They’re learning how to code and be entrepreneurs – all at their own pace – while receiving real time feedback from their teachers, parents can see too.

Impact

Students are learning at more than three times the normal pace at Hillcrest, and it’s not hard to see why. For example, instead of learning about risk management, maths and the history of exploration from textbooks, famous explorer Geoff Wilson conducts lessons with students over Skype, direct from his journey across Antarctica. At Hillcrest, students are taught how to achieve anything.
