Hillcrest Recieves an Array of Awards in Schools Science Competition

Hillcrest recently entered a number of students into the 2018 Griffith University Gold Coast Schools Science Competition. This rigorous competition required scientific journals, explanations, and exceptional presentation and reasoning skills, and involved fierce competition against Prep - Year 12 students from many Gold Coast and South Brisbane schools.

Ten Hillcrest students from Years 3 - 6 entered, as well as 15 from 5/6 Lumos, and 15 from our Year 9 New Horizons Program. Hillcrest received a number of awards, including:

In the Year 3/4 Engineering and Technology Category

  • 3rd Place: Hin Cai, Mia Ravening and Rainbow Lau - Solar Car with Recycled Materials

In the Year 5/6 Environmental Action Plan Category
A sweep awards went to students from our 5/6 Lumos class, following their Term 2 DCL Electricity Efficiency Project:

  • 2nd Place: Georgie Zerbst and Ella Thompson - Green Roofs
  • 3rd Place: Lily Porter, Elise McGeorge and Ruby Allen - Slicing with Solar
  • Highly Commended: Jessica Powell and Caitlin Brodie - Hillcrest Energy Saving
  • Highly Commended: Savanna Brosnan and Taylah Britz- Pavegen - One step away
  • Highly Commended: Finn Mackenzie and Lachlan McAlpine - Bashing the Bad Bills

In the Year 9/10 Division of the Communicating Science Category
Our Year 9 New Horizons Science students also received a raft of awards following their Term 2/3 Science/DCL:

  • 1st place: Shelby Parkes - Defenders of the Earthling; The immune system
  • Equal 2nd place: Jasmine Scott - The Science of Toast
  • Equal 2nd place: Victoria Haywood - The Addicted Brain
  • 3rd place: Ella van Bruggen - Your Brain on Food

The 2018 Griffith University Gold Coast Schools Science Exhibition, and the awards presentation, were held at the Queensland Academy for Health Sciences on Thursday 30 August. Well done to all of our student entrants, we are very proud of your effort and achievements.
