Layers of Learning - Real and Supportive Relationships

Quality Teaching and Learning at Hillcrest Christian College

Over the past 15 months we have been working to develop a clear, research-based teaching and learning framework that identify key standards for our teachers. Our Layers of Learning Framework is a set of broad guidelines relating to quality teacher practices and represents the way we teach at Hillcrest Christian College. The framework reflects our College cornerstones and our commitment to a consistent and effective teaching approach so that all students have the best opportunity to learn and reach their full potential.

REAL AND SUPPORTIVE RELATIONSHIPS

“Students will be more motivated and successful in academic environments when they believe that they belong and are accepted.” (Yaeger, David et al, 2013)

At Hillcrest Christian College, we are all responsible for creating a community of mutual respect and rapport by the way we know, value and interact with each other. Our desire is a community where individual differences are nurtured and catered for, and an open and meaningful communication occurs between all. We all have a responsibility to encourage and cultivate a community where all members experience belonging, acceptance, friendliness and a positive culture in a real and supportive environment.

In the Bible there are many verses that echo this aim. For example in Ephesians (4:2-3), Paul urges us to [walk…] with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, eager to maintain the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.”

As Hillcrest Christian College teachers we aim to:

R1

build a positive community of respect and understanding.

R2

celebrate, nurture, cater for and value individual differences.

R3

communicate effectively, meaningfully, supportively.

As teachers and parents, the types of relationships we nurture and establish with the children in our care have an immense impact on their success, not just academically but emotionally and spiritually.

When we listen carefully; interact sensitively; show personal interest; support enthusiastically; praise genuinely; confront sensitively when needed and forgive freely, we reduce the emotional and social barriers that may stop young people from believing in themselves and excelling.
