March Performing Arts Update

"Thoroughly Modern Millie" - SLC Musical, May, 2017

In May this year, 40 students in Year 8-12 from the Senior Learning Community, plus student musicians, student tech crew, student artists and a group of dedicated staff will produce the 2002 Broadway hit musical, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" in the Hillcrest theatre. This incredible is set in 1920's New York, with a live jazz orchestra, specialist dancers, and will feature some of our most talented Senior Students in the following roles -

Jimmie - Isaac Wan Lum
Trevor - Liam Scott
Mrs Meers - Brylee Davis
Bun Foo - Brian Wu
Ching Ho - Angus Wong
Mrs Flannery - Amanda Davenport

Tickets will go on sale at the start of term 2 for family, friends and the whole Hillcrest Community.

Choral Excellence Camp

Congratulations to Ms Moon and the Choral team for another fantastic camp at QCCC Mt Tambourine a few weeks ago. The camp culminated in a concert featuring our two oldest excellence choirs, Bel Canto and Bella Voce, performing for family and friends. Look out for more news from our choirs as Bella Voce tours to Canberra later this year for the National Eisteddfod.

Instrumental Programs Kick-off

All of our Bands and String ensembles have commenced rehearsals for the year. Our programs continue to grow and benefit from recent success in competitions, and the professional tuition from our Instrumental staff. We welcome Miss Chloe Richardson as the new Strings Coordinator at Hillcrest, and Mr Warren Dorr as Instrumental Coordinator, as we support them in building a formidable Instrumental program at the College. For the first time in our College history, our Senior Concert Band has over 50 members.

Acting Academy

A brand new program at Hillcrest is the Acting Academy. Our coordinator for the program is Mrs Lucy Martin. Over 90 students have signed up and have been enjoying classes this term so far. The focus of this program is building acting skills for stage and screen, and all programs are designed around end of term performances. Watch this space for news about upcoming performances.

Hillcrest Dance Academy

Our HIllcrest Dance Academy, is in its fourth year of partnership with CAPA (the Curumbin Academy of Performing Arts), and this year we have record enrolments! WIth over 25 classes happening each week, hundreds of students from kindy to yr 12 are receiving professional tuition in ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip hop and musical theatre. Our MPH dance studios have also had some renewal work, with a professional dance floor installed in both MPH rooms, plus a brand new sound system.

Cheerleading

A new initiative commencing Term 2 is Hillcrest Cheerleading. The program will be run by Mrs Keily Hudson who has National experience in this area. Already we have had a great number of students sign up for the team, coming from a range of dance acrobatics, and cheer backgrounds and experiences. The focus of the group will be to support the College sporting programs, especially Basketball, with the drumline; but also working towards competitions. SLC Music Showcase Concert, Friday 24th March, 6.30pm in the Theatre

This concert coming up will feature our top performing groups from the SLC - Senior Concert Band, Drumline, Hillcrest String Orchestra, Bel Canto, Bella Voce, and Angus Wong on piano. This concert will also be the public launch of our musical, "Thoroughly Modern Millie" where the cast will give a sneak preview of what is to come in the show.

New Kawai 7ft Grand Piano for the Hillcrest Theatre

We are really blessed to be receiving a new professional concert grand piano for the theatre. This kind of instrument is really speacial for our school, and will be of the top quality needed for our best piano students to perform on, and to accompany our World class choirs. A special launch event is being held next week, featuring some of our College pianists.
