Year 4 Materials and Packaging

This term, our Year 4s have been investigating materials and packages. They looked at different materials such as plastic, paper and cardboard and have conducted numerous experiments. As part of their Science assessment they had to create packaging for a fragile object (a raw egg), their brief was that the packaging had to be light, waterproof and strong enough to endure being sent through the post. Some children made packages that protected the item, others designed packages that were visually appealing, but not very protective. Teachers then recreated what a mailman could do to the packages and students saw if their packaging “survived” the test.

To develop a greater understanding of design and packaging Grade 4A, 4Y and 4SL had a special visitor Debbie Bognar, a Freelance Branding and Packaging Designer. She explained her job to the students and even brought in samples of yogurt for students to try. They looked at 4 different types of strawberry yogurt and how they were each designed and packaged. They then chose their favourite, then tasted each one. Some of the students then changed their minds as to which yogurt was their favourite. The favourite part was learning that Debbie had actually designed the package for one of the yogurts that was tasted! The students are all now inspired to design their own yogurt containers!
