Year 8 Camp Report 2017

On Wednesday 1 February, Year 8s (with nine teachers in tow) bused their way to the QCCC site at Brookfield where they were based for the next three days.

On arrival, students were sent to their rooms and were thrilled to find that not only were they with their friends but every unit had its own ensuite and air conditioning! Students then went straight to morning tea and begun to discover that camp food at this venue was quite good. For the remainder of the day students rotated through various group activities. The favourite for Day One was the rock climbing wall which had varying levels of difficulty. The other thing that students enjoyed was the every few hours visit to the dining room where they were fed, rehydrated and enjoyed some escape from the hot air. Students embraced all activities with enthusiasm and wholeheartedly encouraged one another.

Day Two was the traditional Bridge 2 Bridge challenge where students were with their friends, had GPS units and had to collect answers at various Geo-checkpoints around Brisbane City and Southbank. Many popped into iconic air-conditioned venues such as the QUT cube, GOMA, museum, Art gallery; they played in parks, caught a ferry across the river and popped into 7/11 to grab a much needed slushy. Overall, they had a wide range of experiences on this challenge. They loved jumping into the pool when they arrived back at camp and were highly entertained by our guest speaker for the evening who told his indigenous stories.

Day Three was final group activities with plenty of food breaks and then the air-conditioned bus ride home. Overall this was an amazing group of students who were a pleasure to spend 3 days.

Some highlights from students:

“During camp I became friends with new people. I enjoyed the happy and positive atmosphere.”
“Camp was an awesome experience. One of the funniest parts was when all my friends had to carry me in a stretcher but dropped me over and over and basically let me die from a snake bite.” (Note to parents: this was a simulation activity)
“In the devotions I liked how the theme was choosing your own pathway and I liked how the teachers shared their testimonies.”
“Walking around Brisbane was a highlight for me because I got to see some exotic and significant places in Brisbane and the exercise helped me during camp.”
“There were heaps of laughs, we all learnt to TRUST each other and WORK AS A TEAM.”
“We played Spotlight at night, it was so good.”
“The highlights of camp were the bus trips. I liked being pushed to do things outside of my comfort zone, how all the girls got to bond in a few different ways and all the funny times we had at our meals.”
