Welcome

Learning Support

Our College operates a successful Learning Support program from Prep - Year 12, staffed by qualified teachers and aides. At Hillcrest, we believe that every child is an individual, uniquely made in the image of God, and we do our very best to nurture, guide and support children and their parents, throughout the learning journey. Our aim in Learning Support is to identify developmental issues as early as possible, and to work with children and their parents to address problem areas. The early identification of learning needs is fundamental to implementing a successful strategy of support, for any student who needs it.

JumpStart Academic Success Program

At Hillcrest we understand the importance of giving our International students the extra support they need to successfully complete assessment tasks in mainstream subjects, so we offer the Jumpstart Academic Success Program at no additional cost.

Our JumpStart Academic Success Program, provides Year 7 – 12 International Students the opportunity for additional assistance with homework, assignments and exam preparation. Students are required to participate in JumpStart unless they have achieved a GPA or 13 or above.

 Jumpstart includes:

  • 2 x compulsory after school classes per week
  • Access to qualified teachers
  • Personalised attention
  • Proofreading and editing support
  • QCS Preparation and IELTS Support

Students are supported in the following ways:

  • Ensuring awareness of due dates for assessment tasks and exams are met.
  • Assistance with the development of good time management, organisational and study skills.
  • Explaining assessment criteria in simple language and scaffolding of assignments to ‘get students started’.
  • Checking drafts/assignments for correct grammar, sentence structure and direction.
  • Checking that homework requirements are being fulfilled.
  • Keeping teachers of mainstream subjects informed of student’s progress.
  • Heads of Faculty and classroom teachers are invited to the Jumpstart classes as required to clarify assessment tasks and to provide additional assistance to the International students in understanding their assessment tasks.
  • Students who attend Jumpstart classes and make effective use of this time generally show a marked improvement in their academic studies.
After-School Tutoring

A variety of free tutoring is available to all students after school from Monday – Friday.

These include:

  • Extra lessons by the teacher to help consolidate the understanding of course work.
  • Small group tutoring on Maths, Science and English
  • Informal meetings with the teacher about specific questions that students may have about the course work.

These opportunities are voluntary but helpful to ensuring success in the students' academic achievements.
