2019 GCI Basketball Success

The 2019 Gold Coast Invitational basketball tournament was played during the recent College term break. This annual three-day competition is hosted and run by Hillcrest Christian College, and was created to attract teams from around Australia to the Gold Coast, to play in a world-class event. This year we hosted teams from the Philippines and New Zealand, along with interstate athletes from Victoria and New South Wales. The event was organised by Jennelle Cameron, and took place at the Carrara Basketball Complex for the very first time.

Hillcrest had seven teams competing at the event and all teams enjoyed varying levels of success, during what many considered to be some of the toughest games in this tournament's history.

In the end, there could be only four winners across the Senior and Freshman age divisions. The Hillcrest senior girls team won the championship which was an incredible feat considering that most of their games were played with only five players. Well done ladies! The senior boys were defeated in the final to Ipswich Grammar School, who were a very strong team throughout the Carnival and deserved the championship title.

The Freshman Girls championship was won by our Hillcrest team, who were the definitive front runners from the start of the carnival. The Freshman Boys championship was won by Frankston High School, a very strong basketball team from Victoria. Every Hillcrest team member played with pride for their team and their College, and should be congratulated on their incredible sportsmanship.

Thank you to every person who gave their time and energy to prepare and run this large-scale event, and special thanks to the players and coaches who brought their passion for basketball to the courts throughout the GCI tournament. The GCI organisation committee is already busy planning the 2020 event which promises to be another world-class event in 2020.
