FLARE

In 2017, we have started a new exciting enrichment program called FLARE. However, FLARE is not just a program, it is a way of thinking and, as such, is also present in any classroom where critical and creative thinking flourish.

This term, there have been three focus areas in FLARE:

  • Mathematics explorations and investigations;
  • Writing, where students take on the ‘real-life’ role of an author to write stories and non-fiction pieces that could be used as real-life readers for younger children;
  • I-Time, is a time when children are encouraged to wonder, ask questions and gain the skills to find the answers to those questions. The children have a ‘Wonder Journal’ where they write down all their questions and the things they wonder about. The answers to some questions are simple, while others will form the basis of a long-term project.

Although the FLARE program deals with new and enriching content, the focus is more on skill acquisition, namely:

Self-Management
Effective Participation
Creative Thinking
Reflective Learning
Enquirer (independent inquiry)
Team Work

It’s been a great term and the students have really engaged well with all activities.
