Legal Eagles Soar to Great Heights

Hillcrest’s Senior Legal Studies classes have enjoyed an exciting finish to the year with the Year 11s recently visiting the University of Queensland Law Faculty for thought-provoking interactive human rights seminars for their Term 4 Multimodal Presentations. The Years 10 and 12 classes became immersed in an absorbing talk by District Court Judge Rafter, followed by ‘up close and personal’ viewing of District and Supreme Court criminal sentencing hearings, providing invaluable information and insights for their respective criminal law topics this term.

Our young ‘Legal Eagles’ have again soared to great heights in competitions against other schools throughout the year, including the following highlights:

  • Three Year 11 Legal students, Paris Thompson, Gemma McIndoe and Shakirra Enright, competed in this year’s prestigious Bond University High School Mooting Competition with Paris winning one of only six ‘High Commended Advocates’ awards from a field of 40 student advocates in the Gold Coast region of the national competition.
  • Four Year 12 Legal students, Daniel Coulthard, Kate van Bruggen, Melissa Rugbur and Ryan Woodward, spoke with clarity and confidence in the Queensland Legal Studies Youth Parliament in Brisbane, culminating in the awarding to Daniel of the ‘Best Speaker for the Opposition’ monetary prize.
