AQUA ENGLISH DAY
We often take our surf beaches for granted on the Gold Coast. However for many of our new international students, swimming and enjoying surf beaches is a new experience. Sadly many visitors from other cultures get into danger when they first visit our local beaches. One of our events this term on the International Learning Community calendar was our Aqua-English Day which occurred at the end of February. As the name suggests, Aqua English focuses on skill development and cultural English language acquisition in all aquatic environments; from swimming pools to beaches. Our goal is not only to help students gain some basic skills for surviving in the water and surf but also help them to learn key English words that will help them to keep safe and knowledgeable about surf-lifesaving.
Although the weather ensured the students stayed wet both in and out of the water, students met the challenge of learning swimming techniques at Palm Beach Currumbin Swimming Pool and then learned lots of safety tips and enjoyed some fun at Currumbin Beach. At the end of the day the students enjoyed another typical Aussie tradition, the sausage and bread lunch.
A big thank you to Mrs Kylie Potter and Mrs Wendy Wotton for encouraging and supporting the students on this very enjoyable day.
HOMESTAY COORDINATOR – TEMPORARY CHANGE
Our Homestay Coordinator, Mrs Gail Muller, is enjoying ten-week of well-earned long service leave and will return on 15 May 2017. While Gail is away Mrs Ilene Fesuk will be filling in for her. Ilene works Monday, Wednesday and Friday – 8:00am to 3:00pm. If you have queries outside of this time Wendy Chidambaram, our Senior Administrator, will be happy to support you.
