The 2017 Sport Season has started off as being one of the busiest on record, with our Basketball, Futsal and Netball programs all growing to record numbers. Record numbers of students have also trialled in the South Coast Sport pathway, with over 50 students being successful across a variety of sports. The Junior Learning Community after school co-curricular program has over 500 individual engagements, which in its second year of operation is displaying an amazing culture and level of participation. While all areas are growing, the vision of building great young people remains at the heart of Hillcrest Sport. We would like to thank all staff, students and parents for their engagement and willingness to get on board with all we are doing in 2017.
The first major sporting event for 2017 was the Junior Learning Community Interhouse Swimming Carnival. This was held in Week 2 and saw a major change from previous years with the introduction of Year 3 in to the Carnival’s format. The day exposed our students to the positive and inclusive culture that is inherent in Hillcrest Sport. This was evident in the exceptional participation in all events, along with the support that students gave one another. Extending on the participation, the Carnival saw some exceptional individual performances with more elite swimmers showing off their talents to the College community. Special recognition goes to Gideon Burnes who broke the College Record in every event he swum in, consequently earning himself the Swimmer of The Meet Award. Congratulations also to Carmichael House who took out the overall House Champion, and Flynn for taking out the House Spirit Award. Special recognition also goes to the Carnival Age Champions (below) who performed exceptionally throughout the day. A special thank you to all parents and carers who assisted on the day.
Age Champions:
7/8 Years: Lucy Potts and Hunter Bleechmoore
9 Years: Frankie Leonardie and Jax Bryson
10 Years: Evie Scharenguival and Hugh Cullen
11 Years: Eliza Rogers and Noah Parnaby
12 Years: Lillian Powell and Gideon Burnes
The Hinterland Green District Swimming Carnival was held on Monday 20th January at TSS. Hillcrest was represented by 30 students in Years 4-12, with many students being unavailable for the carnival due to the State Nippers Carnival in Harvey Bay. Despite this, the team that travelled to Districts competed at a high standard with all students pushing their personal best achievements.
By the end of the carnival, 4 students progressed through to the Regional Swimming Carnival to be held next week. Special mention goes to Gideon Burnes who continued his exceptional Interhouse Carnival by blitzing all competitors in the Breaststroke event, breaking one Meet Record by over 10 seconds. We would like to thank all students for their enthusiasm and for representing Hillcrest with such high distinction. A very special thanks to Mr Hauch, Ms Cooper and Mr Pauly for encouraging the students throughout the day, along with all parents who came to assist with the team.
The next major carnival for Hillcrest will be the Interhouse Cross Country Carnival, to be held on the last Wednesday of this Term. We look forward to seeing all students and as many parents at this event as we can.
In its second year of operation, the Hillcrest Christian College Netball Club has nearly doubled in size to 7 teams from Prep to Year 6, up from 4 teams in 2016 that ranged from students in Prep to Year 5. All club teams will be playing on a Saturday morning at the Hinterland District Netball Association competition at Firth Park, where students engage in one of the highest standard competitions on the Coast.
The Hillcrest Netball Club has continued on its impressive culture and community support, with parents and older students all joining in on what is a fantastic grass roots program that will grow in excellence in to the future. This program has been widely embraced as a great way for students and families to pioneer something that will continue to be truly remarkable at Hillcrest in to the future, while also providing a convenient way for students to play weekend sport while training straight after school. This program will continue to grow in to 2018, with the expectation Hillcrest will have teams made up of students from the Senior Learning Community. Exciting times are ahead.
If any parents are interested in their child being part of the Netball Club in 2018, please email apauly@hillcrest.qld.edu.au for more information, or simply come along and watch a training session on a Wednesday, Thursday or Friday afternoon on the Outdoor Ball Courts.
Hillcrest Christian College is part of the Hinterland Green District Sport Association, which allows students from a broad range of sports to represent the College. This pathway can eventually lead to Queensland and Australian Schoolboy/Schoolgirl Selection within each individual sport.
Dates for trials are always advertised on the Hillcrest Sport Facebook page and parents wanting to know when trials are held are encouraged to monitor this site. The dates are also available on the Parent Lounge, along with the appropriate paperwork that needs to be completed prior to the trial. All students wishing to trial through the Hinterland pathway must register their intent in person through the sports office. For any further information, please email sports@hillcrest.qld.edu.au.
