Professional Athletes Visit Hillcrest to Inspire Junior Students

Last week our Hillcrest Year 3-6 students were inspired with a visit from professional athletes Darragh Keogh (Boxing) and Craig Burns (Athletics). Craig is a sprinter who competes in 200m and 400m events, and the students were in awe of his ability to run the 200m in around 20 secs, and the 400m in about 45 secs.

Our students engaged in some exciting warm up activities with the sportsmen, and Darragh then spoke about how he got involved in boxing, how to live a healthy life, and the benefits of regular exercise to improve their health. Craig talked about about the Commonwealth Games, explaining how athletes qualify for the Games; and Australia’s success, having received a total of 852 Gold Commonwealth Medals to date.

The highlight for many of our students were the two games they played with our guests. In the first game, Mahi Gandhre (4GM) and Byron Evans (5/6C) tested their coordination against Darragh using the boxing gloves. In the second game, Jake Greenway (4AG), Savannah Brosnan (5/6C) and Baxter Fewings (3JY) tested their strength, and Jake narrowly won the second game, impressing the audience.

The inspiring young men also shared about how they set personal and professional goals, their dedication and perseverance to their sport, and what inspires them to achieve their personal best. We appreciate Darragh and Craig for visiting Hillcrest and inspiring our students to think about their own personal goals, and we wish both athletes all the best for their upcoming events.
