Year 10 Legal Eaglets Enjoy Visit to Queensland's Parliament House

On Friday, 17 February, Hillcrest’s Year 10 Legal Studies class embarked on a journey of discovery through the hallowed chambers and halls of Queensland’s home of democracy, Parliament House in Brisbane. Here are some of the students’ reflections about their first Legal Studies real world adventure:

“The excursion to Parliament House was informative and fun-filled. I loved the magnificent chandeliers and architecture, as well as listening to Ros Bates, our local State Member of Parliament, explain how and why she works hard for our community.” (Mia Geyer)
“The architectural designs were astounding!” (Annien Taljaard)
“The excursion provided us with invaluable knowledge and insights about politics and law.” (Sarah Thompson)
“Legal Studies is the subject for the real world!” (Georgia Smith)
“The excursion was very enjoyable, especially hearing Ros Bates shed light on important issues, like domestic violence.” (Somalea Hayward)
“I enjoyed meeting and having a photo with Ros Bates.” (Emily Chatham)
“It was an amazing experience filled with really interesting facts. It is definitely an experience to remember! Parliament House is full of exquisite artefacts, statues and Indigenous art pieces, highlighting the cultural aspects of our democracy in Queensland.” (Keely Harris)
“I enjoyed the mock parliamentary debate about a hypothetical bill seeking to make sport no longer compulsory in Queensland schools because I played the role of Sergeant-at-Arms and got to wear white gloves and carry the gold-plated mace.” (Antony Vincent)
“I now know that ‘Aye’ is pronounced ‘I’!” (Sarah Thompson)
“We won the mock parliamentary debate, which was a great way to learn how our democratic system of government works.” (Freya Englert)
“My favourite part was going inside the ‘green room’ (the Legislative Assembly) which was not what I had expected; it was very grand with beautifully designed gold-leafed walls and ceilings, as well as super-comfy chairs where the Premier and Queensland’s other MPs sit when Parliament is in session.” (Zak Scott)
