Year 12 ‘Legal Eagles’ Make Stirring Speeches in Queensland Youth Parliament

Four of Hillcrest’s Year 12 Legal Studies class, Alexandra Murray, Kayla Scheinberg, Paris Thompson and Shakirra Enright, had the wonderful opportunity in Term 2 this year to sit in the seats of Queensland’s parliamentarians, quite literally, by taking part in the annual Queensland Legal Studies Youth Parliament in the Legislative Assembly chamber in Brisbane City.

Each of our students did Hillcrest proud by making a passionate and persuasive speech to the Youth Parliament about a controversial Queensland issue and were then presented with certificates by the Speaker of the Queensland Parliament.

Of particular note was Alexandra Murray’s speech which was adjudged by a panel of Legal Studies teachers to be the best Government speech from a field of 30 Government speakers.

All of Hillcrest’s youth parliamentarians agreed afterwards that it was an excellent real-life experience which was almost surreal in terms of their having graced the hallowed halls and seats of the Queensland Parliament!
