Year 9 Visual Art

Year 9 Visual Art students at Hillcrest are working on a portraiture unit celebrating cultural diversity and acceptance. They have each taken a series of photographs of their peers representing culture using our recently purchased professional studio lighting and Canon DSLR cameras. On Friday 5 May students were involved in a painting workshop with guest artist Tamara Armstrong, where they transformed their photographs into paintings through stylised shape and ‘broken colour’ techniques. The artist explained her current ‘Women of Colour’ series which celebrates diversity and role models with the proceeds of the sale of paintings going to charity.

Tamara Armstrong commented on how diligently students listened and took to their canvases with great focus and a level of skill that she considered incredible for Year 9 students. The artist was impressed with the student works and looks forward to seeing their finished paintings at the end of term. The student works will be on display at our Art Extravaganza Exhibition in October.

A huge thank you to artist Tamara Armstrong. We appreciated her expertise and thoroughly enjoyed learning about her painting style and professional practice.
